Attack of the worms

During Spring, we always get these awesome worms that string silk everywhere to move around. They come in a variety of colors and sizes, some of which are quite ugly. When their population grows enough, it becomes difficult to go outside without getting one on you or hitting one of their strings.
I heard on the local news that these things are caterpillars and become moths. This year, we are expecting to have even more than usual, as, for reasons unknown, not as many were consumed by their predators last year. Perhaps it is too early, but I have not seen very many around yet this year.
I wonder where all in the world these worms are, and how much people are annoyed by them. They don’t bother me… though I do get to use them to annoy others.
